TT #25: Just Shoot Me

3 Sep 2008

Firearms and Other Mistakes in Books
or Why Watching Movies Is Poor Research

Number 1
Revolvers don’t have safeties.

Number 2
And neither do the latest Glock semi-automatics.

Number 3
Revolvers cannot be silenced.

Number 4
A silenced gun still makes a sound.

Number 5
Revolvers don’t use clips.

Number 6
Clips and magazines are not interchangeable.

Number 7
Law enforcement officers do not actually rack the slide before going after a perp. If they have to rack the slide, that means the chamber is empty and they should be replaced with someone who knows how to be prepared.

Number 8
Shooting locks off of doors is a bad idea. One word: ricochet.

Number 9
Dead bodies don’t bleed.

Number 10
Chloroform does not knock people out, and especially not instantly and quietly. It’s more likely to cause brain damage or cardiac arrest before the victim loses consciousness.

Number 11
Chalk outlines are a thing of the past…and Hollywood.

Number 12
Police detectives do not investigate crimes where the victim is related to them. (You’d think this one would be obvious.)

Number 13
Law enforcement agencies do not allow private citizens to direct an investigation. (I really did come across a book where the CIA and FBI allowed a twenty-four-year-old artist to tell them how to run a criminal investigation. Naturally, it was a best-seller.)

All these things would get right past me! Thanks for the heads up.

Dead…heart not beating…no pulse…no blood surging from the wound. You got that right. I too remember way WAY back in the olden days of yore…the shoot outs and the number of shots would go on for hours at a time without reloading.

My T-13 is posted. Last one over to visit me is a rotten egg! :o)

As always, you are a faunt of information! Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom, and knowledge of the inner workings of guns, et al.!

    Very good!

Also worth knowing are that (1) Police officers can’t shoot a gun out of a criminal’s hand. (2) If someone is shot with anything of higher calibre than a .22, they can’t just grab the wound, wince, and let a little blood trickle through their fingers (3) If you get shot in the arm or leg with a .38 or anything larger, you will most likely lose the use of that limb, and probably have to have it amputated.

I knew the dead body one. I know a lot of stuff about dead bodies. Mortuary info. You pick up a lot of weird knowledge working there.

I have a DH who is a gun enthusiast… he regularly brings up faux pas such as these! LOL…

    Happy TT!

Oh, don’t get me startedo on the stupid and wrong things in movies! Noone likes to watch TV with me because I get so upset about stupidity, lol.
Like that dumb new mermaid show, H20, where the mermaids jump in the water with their clothes and cell phones, magically turn into mermaids, then get out of the water completely dry, hair and all, and their cell phones are with them and working. Though they didn’t bring a bag of their clothing and stuff with them………..

See, don’t get me started, lol.

Funny list and some great info. happy TT

Winter – Have you considered compiling a list? I’m always looking for interesting ways to kill people…but only in my books. Seriously.

  12. 10 Sep 2008 4:50 PM

That’s why research is sooo important. Great list. Happy T13!

Let me guess, you’re a writer right?

Awsome list and for some reason, I knew these things too. Movies take a lot of liberty. Last night I watched the extras on the dvd for “3:10 To Yuma” and they said how they used sparks to show bullets bouncing off things…but bullets don’t actually leave sparks. Just in movies.

    Fun list…and here is mine:

What a fascinating list. I did not know dead bodies do not bleed or that chloroform does not knock someone out but could give them cardiac arrest. Talk about book and movie blunders-wow.

    My TT is up here.

    I love the list!

I’ve been working on a real life murder from the 1880’s. There are so many false ideas floating around people just aren’t interested in actual facts.
